Having crossed its previous target of $1.5 million, Hidaya Foundation has raised its goal to $3 million for providing immediate and on-going earthquake relief efforts.
International agencies have estimated that more than 87,000 people have died and that nearly one million people have suffered extreme economic disaster as a result of the earthquake. Hidaya Foundation has taken a leadership role in coordinating relief efforts through several significant initiatives:
Hidaya Foundation has collected over $1.4 million in cash and over $600,000 of in-kind donations, consisting of approximately 352 tons of supplies, including tents, blankets, winter clothing, sleeping bags, crutches, wheel chairs and medicine.
Hidaya Foundation has already utilized and distributed nearly $1.75 million (including 8% expected overhead for 2005) of the $2 million collected to date in purchasing and delivering supplies as well as food and water to affected villages.
Hidaya Foundation has shipped over twenty containers (40ft each) of in-kind donations to Pakistan for disbursement in the affected areas. Fifteen containers were shipped from Hidaya Foundation’s Headquarters in Santa Clara, California; one was shipped from the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) Headquarters in Plainfield, Indiana; two were shipped from Irving, Texas; and two more from Tustin, California.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan-based sister organization, Hidaya Trust, continues to provide on-the-ground coordination and distribution of relief supplies to 28 villages in the districts of Bagh, Muzaffarabad, Rawlakot, Abbotabad, Balakot and Mansehra. Hidaya Foundation continues to work closely with college student volunteers in Pakistan from the Gulam Ishaq Khan Institute.
