Help Options for Displaced People

The most important first step for all of the Katrina survivors is to register with FEMA. This important step starts the process for some emergency funding to each family. The phone number is 1-800-621 FEMA and the website is www.fema.org. There are FEMA stations on the Reliant property and at the George R. Brown. All of the other Red Cross shelters have access to registration help. For all of the others in local shelters, congregations, and even private homes, there is help. But the first step is to register.
• The next step in the massive aid that is being provided by the city and county is to provide funded housing. All survivors are eligible for up to six months of housing and you can learn more by visiting https://katrina.h oustontx.gov. You may also register for shelter at http://www .har.com/RealtorsHelp or you can call the Houston Area Urban League at 713.393.8732 so that they may assist in matching you with an available shelter
• We (APPNA officials) have learned that the County is making funding available to congregations who are not Red Cross shelters, but have been providing shelter and food. There is even funding available for congregational members who are sheltering people in their private homes - the funding will go to the congregation to reimburse their members. You can register to find out more.
