Karachi Club’s Haleem Party in Garden Grove
By Naushad Sarwar

Garden Grove, CA: Every month of the Islamic calendar has its own significance. Muharram, the first month of the calendar, teaches us the lessons of sacrifice, selflessness and patience. To remember and to pay tribute to the supreme sacrifice and endurance of the Prophet’s grandson, Hazrat Imam Husain, and his loved ones, the Karachi Club of Los Angeles arranged a haleem party for members of the Pakistani-American community at the sprawling Garden Grove Park, Garden Grove, CA, on February 12, 2006.
The Club has been hosting the haleem party for the last eight years on the auspicious occasion of Ashoura and its arrangements are always excellent. Community members anxiously look forward to the occasion every year and have a lot to discuss and debate as they arrive on the venue of the party. Indisputably, Ashoura is the day marking the most supreme sacrifice in the history of the world.
In keeping with its high traditions of hospitality the Karachi Club members worked with extraordinary zeal to make the occasion a memorable one this year too. The haleem was delicious, the jalaebis were no less tasty, and the setting appeared ideal for a party of this size.

The turnout this year certainly exceeded that of previous years and a good many people kept on coming well past 5 pm but the food was in plenty and so was the hospitality of the Club members.
One must therefore express sincere appreciation of the efforts made by Kamal Zafar, Samin Faruqui, Waseem Zaidi, Asif Faruqui, Atia Baji, Pervez Khan, Arif Abbasi, Mohammad Latif, Ishtiaq Hasan, Mohammad Ahsan, Masood Khan, Khalid Hasan and Ikram Shah in arranging the party.
The Park was packed with spirited Pakistanis who enjoyed the tasty haleem and provided a pageant of color - dressed in attractive national dresses. The kids dashed from one corner to another while the ladies and gents exchanged pleasantries as they enjoyed the haleem. Everyone heartily thanked the organizers before taking leave.
The organizers deserve kudos for arranging a successful haleem party. They earned the gratitude of the many community members who had come from far and near to enjoy their hospitality and the tasty haleem and jalaebis they served.
