Los Angeles: On December 9th, 2007, Safeer e Pakistan, GEO TV's community-based program, organized its 5th Awards Night, one of the most anticipated events in Los Angeles to celebrate its completion of 10 years at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Anaheim.
Despite the intense cold on the eventful Sunday, the turnout exceeded the expected number. Many attendees traveled from across the nation's other states including New York, Chicago, Michigan, Iowa, Idaho, Washington DC, Virginia, Texas, Nevada with friends and family to be at the awards night testifying to Safeere Pakistan’s popularity. The hotel lobby was occupied by Pakistani Americans from across the nation and the desi aura made everyone feel at home.
The glittery event was extremely well organized and filled with speeches, awards, entertainment including colorful dance performances by a renowned Hollywood dance group, the Belly Twins, a fashion show by Frontier Heritage Boutique of Artesia, CA and a scintillating ghazal performance by New York-based famous singer Iqbal Qasim.
The main highlight of the event was an awards presentation to recognize those Pakistani Americans who have attained the highest level of success in their individual capacity as business owners, entrepreneurs, professionals, community leaders and activists and many others who are making a difference and contributing in many areas nationwide in the United States of America. Over 40 individuals were recognized for their achievements including Dr. Gladwin Gill as Man of the Year; Dr. Zeenat Anwar from Michigan as Woman of the Year; Natasha Gill, Youth of the Year; Dr. Khalid Ahmad from Los Angeles, Physician of the Year; Mr. Ken Singh of India as Entrepreneur of the Year; Mr. Hamilton Brewart for Life Time Achievement in Humanitarian Services to South Asian Community; Mr. Arif Mansuri for Entrepreneurship and Community Services; Dr. Amanullah Khan of Dallas, TX for Cancer Research and Physician of the Year from Texas; Mr. Mizammil Malik for Humanitarian Services, Mrs. Fawzia Khawaja for Woman in Business, and many more who were recognized in their respective fields. A special lifetime achievement award was given to Mr. Hamid Malik, President of Los Angeles-based Amtrend Corporations for his services and support to the community.
Syed Ibne Abbas, Consul General of Los Angeles, was the special guest along with his wife Mrs. Sadaf Abbas. Mr. Terry Mc Auliffe, Chairman of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign committee was the invited chief guest at the event. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez of Orange County, Deputy Mayor Arif Ali Khan of Los Angeles, and Goerge Swan of Homeland Security were also present on the occasion.
The event MCs were Ambar Faizi and Wasfa Shafi, former hosts of Safeer e Pakistan along with Fatima Khan, program director of Safeer e Pakistan. Mr. Waqar Ali Khan, Executive Producer of Safeer e Pakistan, gave a brief background about his quest for a TV show and inception of Safeer e Pakistan and its history. He stressed that Safeer e Pakistan was one of the most popular programs on GEO Television Network and was considered as an icon of Pakistan in media. Consul General Ibne Abbas lauded the success and achievement of Safeer e Pakistan and the valuable services it is rendering for the community. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and Deputy Mayor from Los Angeles presented a proclamation to Mr. Waqar Ali Khan and commended his efforts.
A sumptuous dinner was served by Bismillah Halal Tandoori Restaurant of Los Angeles, and the most exquisite fruit and desert display was presented by Rubik Party Planning. The event was sponsored by JFK Realty & Loan Depot, St Ann Hospice, Amtrend, Hamilton Brewart Insurance, Ken Po Fashion, United Central Bank, Dr. Attique Samdani of Virginia, GTT Inc,True MRI Inc., Arif Mansuri, & Habib American Bank and many others who came forward and supported the event. The event was coordinated by Fatima Khan and her assistants Monika Patal and Vipul Masih.
