Link Columnist Tipped as VC of Peshawar University

Newport Beach, CA:  Dr. Sayed Amjad Hussain, a columnist for Pakistan Link, is under consideration by the government of NWFP for vice chancellorship of the University of Peshawar. When contacted by this newspaper Dr. Hussain confirmed that the provincial government had approached him in early March with the proposal.
While on a teaching sabbatical at Khyber Medical College last month he met with the vice chancellor selection committee and later with Mr. Owais Ghani, the provincial governor and chancellor of the university. 
Dr. S. Amjad Hussain is a professor emeritus of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and an op-ed columnist for Toledo Blade, Pakistan Link and a number of other publications.
He is an award winning photographer, an internationally recognized explorer, a community leader and an award winning author who has written eight books on as diverse a subject as religion, culture, history and international relations. He has been in the forefront of preserving the linguistic and cultural legacy of the walled city of Peshawar. In 1998, in recognition of his myriad services to the city of his birth, the citizens and literati of Peshawar bestowed the title of Baba-e-Peshawar on him.
As an explorer he has explored and photographed the entire length of River Indus in Pakistan. In 1996 he led an expedition to explore the source of the river in Kailash Mountain ranges of Western Tibet. A documentary of that expedition was telecast on PBS TV in the spring of 2005. 
Since 1976 Dr. Hussain has visited Pakistan annually to teach at Khyber Medical College, his alma mater, in Peshawar. He has also been a visiting professor to various medical institutions in Pakistan, China, Libya, and India and also in the US. 
 Dr. Hussain has taken on leadership roles in numerous organizations in the greater Toledo area.  Among them, he has served as president of the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo, the Toledo Surgical Society, and the Academy of Medicine of Toledo. On the national level he has served as president of the Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America and Khyber Medical College Alumni Association of North America.
Currently he serves on the Boards of Trustees of the University of Toledo and Public Broadcasting (PBS-WGTE) of Northwest Ohio.
