Rafi Munim Named Glenview’s Hometown Hero

Judy of WGN Radio Chicago is seen talking with the Hometown Hero Rafi Munim

Glenview’s Park Center was transformed into a radio station for a day when the WGN talk show duo Kathy and Judy stopped by Dec. 7 for a morning filled with laughs, news and conversation.

Glenview was the 29th stop for Kathy and Judy on their Hometown Voices Tour, which has the radio hosts taking their show to a different Illinois city each month. They’ve been doing this for two years. On their visits, the pair highlight the communities where listeners live and work, while also honoring the achievements of one local person with the Hometown Hero Award.

The pair honored one local resident for his dedication to breast cancer education.

Rafi Munim, founder of Mission Green Light and a resident of the Glenview Terrace Nursing Center for the last decade, was named Glenview’s Hometown Hero. Munim has helped to inform women of free breast cancer screening programs and he has offered cancer education workshops to those who are uninsured.

Munim said that the residents of the nursing home were his spiritual healers and gave him the moral support to go after his dreams.

“They helped me believe I can also make a difference from a nursing home,” he said. “I started the nonprofit with only $2.”

He said God was helping him through the trying times in his life and said that the name for his nonprofit comes from the fact that God was showing him the “green light.” Munim left the Kathy and Judy audience with one of his poems, “I am a Bird with a Broken Wing,” which he said gave his entire outlook on life.

Munim was presented with a $500 gift certificate to Jewel-Osco.

Along with spotlighting Munim, the show also was full of fun and laughs for those attending.

All the Glenview “girlfriends,” as Kathy and Judy like to call their listeners, showed up to listen to radio hosts Kathy O’Malley and Judy Markey, along with anchor Steve Bertrand, discuss, joke and sometimes bicker about their lives and things in the news. A huge gathering attended the live broadcast.
