Pakistani Americans Form New Body to Serve Country

New York : Some 90 Pakistani-Americans – affiliated with various parties and bodies – decided on Sunday to form a new organization to serve Pakistan’s interests.
The decision to form the ‘Pak-American Foundation’, an umbrella organization, was unanimous, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told reporters after presiding over a meeting of Pakistani-Americans which was also attended by the US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson, Pakistani Ambassador to the the US Hussain Haqqani and Pakistani Ambassador to the United Nations Abdullah Haroon.
The minister said that a steering committee had also been formed to manage groundwork for the organization, which would have its own website. “It was a good day for Pakistan; it was a happy day,” said Qureshi.
The Foundation – to be set up along the lines of the Irish Foundation – would not be political in nature.
The initiative to set up the Foundation was taken by the Pakistan foreign minister and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, whose message was read out at the meeting.
Qureshi said it would be an independent body, and the Pakistani government and the State Department would act only as facilitators.
A meeting of the Foundation is expected to take place in Houston or Los Angeles.
