Farewell Dinner for Consul General Mrs Riffat Masood

The Council of Pakistan American Affairs (COPAA) hosted a farewell dinner for outgoing Consul General Mrs Riffat Masood at the Long Beach Marriott on December 9 th. It was a largely attended event. City and police officials were also present.

Almost all speakers on the occasion – from COPAA members to representatives of various LA-based community organizations, including Urdu Writers Society, Urdu Markaz International, United for Pakistan Independence Day, Memon Organization of North America, American Muslim Women Empowerment Conference, and Developments in Literacy – spoke highly of the outgoing Consul General and her multifarious services during her two-year stint in Los Angeles. Her strivings to strengthen Pak-US ties, improve Pakistan’s image and forge unity among community members were duly applauded.

Dr Judy Chu, a member of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus, described Mrs Masood as an “outstanding consul general” who impressed her by her “graciousness.” She complimented the CG for strengthening Pakistan-US relations and expressed happiness that Mrs Masood would continue her good work as a liaison between the two countries in her new assignment in Islamabad.

The Congresswoman presented Mrs Masood with a Congressional certificate of recognition.

Mrs Anila Ali, well-known educator, author, community activist and human rights advocate, was also given a congressional certificate. The certificate was also posthumously given to the late Hamid Malik, former COPAA President and well-known community activist.

In her farewell address, Mrs Masood thanked members of the community for their cooperation and support during her posting in Los Angeles.
