Pak-Americans to Demonstrate in Support of SC NRO Verdict

Washington, DC: The Pakistan American Democratic Forum (PADF), a grassroots organization founded in 1982 in support of Movement for Restoration of Democracy (MRD), has called on fellow Pakistani-Americans to actively support the Supreme Court’s NRO Implantation verdict.
In its last-ditch effort to pull Pakistan back from the brink of disaster by demonstrating judicial restraint that will be cited in legal text books for decades to come, the Chief Justice has once again demonstrated the same combination of clarity, sagacity and determination, which had prompted Hon Ramsey Clark to say to the Chief Justice Chaudhary: Mr. Chief Justice, you have done what no other judge has been able to do in history.”
“This is a moment of great transformation, a moment in which new a law-abiding Pakistan may emerge from deceased corpse of a feudal society.” PADF National Chair, Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Toor said.
The PADF statement, in part, reads:
“We hereby make a public commitment to support of the recent SC decision, particularly its Option No 6, which, inter alia, stipulates:
The constitutional balance vis-à-vis trichotomy and separation of powers between the Legislature, the Judiciary and the Executive is very delicately poised and if in a given situation the Executive is bent upon defying a final judicial verdict and is ready to go to any limit in such defiance then instead of insisting upon the Executive to implement the judicial verdict and thereby running the risk of bringing down the constitutional structure itself this Court may exercise judicial restraint and leave the matter to the better judgment of the people of the country or their representatives in the Parliament to appropriately deal with the delinquent.
The PADF has announced the following actions to help develop awareness and popular support for Option NO 6, the best option.
1. Organize demonstrations, vigils, and teach-in all major cities including Washington, DC.
2. Help build public pressure in support of full compliance with the Supreme Court’s decision by Pakistan’s dysfunctional parliament.
3. Call on ALL opposition parties to unite and pressure PM Gilani government to comply
4. Call on US civil society’s legal components such as the American Bar Association, Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), National Lawyers Guild and others to support rule of law in Pakistan.
