“Tape Ball” Cricket Tournament in Irvine

Irvine , CA : The Irvine Pakistani Parents Association (IPPA), a non-profit organization, will be hosting the first ever “Tape Ball” Cricket Tournament in February 2012.

The tournament, known as the Irvine Premier League T10 (IPL T10), follows the same format as the popular Indian Premier League, which is an annual success in pro-cricket.

Registered players went through a valuation process and were then formally drafted by seven IPL T10 team owners in a formal draft held in early December 2011. Each team has a squad of fifteen semi-pro and amateur cricketers.

The tournament will be played in Irvine at the Irvine Company’s massive parking lot facility, near the Irvine Spectrum (corner of Alton Parkway/Gateway). Imran Ashraf, one of the tournament organizers, considers the facility as “ideal” for tape ball cricket and believes the “central location” will certainly generate some “local interest.”

IPL T10 league commissioner and current IPPA Treasurer, Farhan Aziz, an Irvine resident himself, is excited about introducing the sport to the city of Irvine. “While the tournament is being held to raise funds for the Irvine Public Schools Foundation, we also view this as a perfect opportunity to introduce cricket to Irvine and South County residents.” Farhan went on to say “tape ball cricket is easily transportable and most school playgrounds could accommodate this format. Of course, the fact that it is fast paced will also help provide a positive introduction of the sport to our schools.”

The tournament will be held on February 11, 12 and will conclude on the 25th. The IPPA is expecting a number of officials/dignitaries to be in attendance. Entrance to see the matches is free.
