COPAA to Sponsor Third American Muslim Women's Empowerment Conference on April 21

Council of Pakistan American Affairs (COPAA) is proud to sponsor the third annual American Muslim Women's Empowerment Conference (AMWEC) on April 21st, 2013, once again in partnership with the Los Angeles Police Department, LAPD, says a COPAA Press Release. It adds:

The objective of the conference is to provide information and enhance overall awareness regarding women's rights and civic responsibility. The goal of AMWEC is to empower, inform, and educate women with requisite skills and knowledge to participate politically and socially in their communities, while providing support and guidance to peers.

AMWEC, supported by COPAA, Council of Pakistan American Affairs, seeks to bring Muslim women leaders from all fields to mainstream America. AMWEC aims to engage more women in civic life and encourages their engagement in the democratic process. AMWEC connects with organizations that will help in cases of abuse such as SAHARA and ACCESS. Moreover, AMWEC seeks to connect Muslim women with charity organizations in America to partner in service and interfaith events.

Greater participation in community governance will help create an environment where Muslim women can come together and contribute to the discourse against biased interpretations of Islam and women's rights.

This year's event will focus on domestic violence and issues affecting Muslim youth, especially girls. The event will also include stories from women survivors of domestic abuse and women achievers who overcame hurdles to become successful in mainstream America.

Special guest will include:   Sheriff Lee Baca, LAPD Chief Mike Downing, COPAA President Adnan Khan, and FBI's Special Agent-in-charge and DHS/USCIS.

This year's award recipients are:
