Pakistani Student Selected as Editor-in-Chief of Harvard Asia Quarterly

Erum Khalid Sattar, doctoral candidate at Harvard Law School, has been selected to be the next Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Asia Quarterly. For the past year, Erum worked closely with Harvard Asia Quarterly as the Head South Asia Editor and brought to it exceptional work ethic, dedication and intellectual contribution.

The Harvard Asia Quarterly is a professional academic journal of Asian studies affiliated with the Harvard University Asia Center and advised by its director, Dr Arthur Kleinman. They publish four times per annum on multidisciplinary topics related to issues in East, South, Central, and Southeast Asia. HAQ is dedicated to facilitating scholarly exchange within the academic community by publishing highly researched and well-documented articles relevant to the discourse on contemporary Asia, as illustrated by their recent publication on their website: www.asiaquarterly.com

Ms Sattar recently co-founded the Pakistan Innovation Network at Harvard South Asia Institute a collaborative venture that will help 1) Create an entrepreneurship ecosystem in Pakistan by identifying key actors, building institutional capacity, and creating an innovative connective network; 2) Mentor innovators through successive entrepreneurship stages and enable experimentation; and 3) Effect constructive change for the bottom of the pyramid through Harvard faculty and student ownership of specific projects. The Harvard Gazette featured PIN in a recent article Bridging the Gap, Digitally .

She is also the current President of Harvard Pakistan Student Group , the first university-wide student organization allowed by Harvard University with a membership of more than 600 people spread across twelve graduate schools and Harvard College, faculty and alumni of the university. A Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln’s Inn, Ms Sattar believes in the human potential to solve even the world’s most intractable problems. She says, “Creating conditions for experimentation is a critical social need today”. Accordingly, her doctoral research at Harvard focuses on the institutional architecture of development.

Ms Sattar’s selection for the prestigious position of Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Asia Quarterly is a huge testament to the contribution South Asians and Pakistanis are making at Harvard, in particular by claiming their place within their larger Asian identity.
