Apply for MPAC’s and Muslim Youth Group of the Islamic Center of Southern California ’s Los Angeles Young Leaders Civic Summit

Los Angeles , CA: Apply today for the Muslim Public Affairs Council’s and the Muslim Youth Group of the Islamic Center of Southern California ’s annual Los Angeles Young Leaders Civic Summit from Aug. 14-16.

Designed to introduce youth to the nerve centers of society - government, media and the entertainment industry - the LA Civic Summit delegates will have the opportunity to visit sites across Los Angeles. Understanding and engaging these industries, including art and history, are essential for the American Muslim community in our growing world.
“The civic summit was an opportunity for me to break away from the thought that Muslims cannot be involved in certain fields,” said Marwa Abdelghani , 2012 LA Civic Summit Delegate and Government and Communications Intern at MPAC. “The Summit helped me understand that if we are not at the table, then we are on the menu. I was able to grow my voice and feel empowered by civic engagement. Before you head back to school, it’s important for all American Muslim students to get a bigger picture of what it takes to be involved in the community.”
Last year delegates met with former LA City Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa , Rep. Jan Perry (D-CA), editors and writers from The Los Angeles Times , producers from KABC Channel 7 and the artists at Cornerstone Theater Company . In addition, the delegates took a tour of the Japanese American National Museum , which was followed by a discussion on the impact of denying a sect of society their inherent civil rights and civil liberties.
These three days will expose youth to these vital areas of society, and they will also allow the delegates to develop their networking skills and meet new young leader peers.
Don't miss out!
