About the translator:
Muhammad Asad, Leopold Weiss, was born of Jewish parents in Livow, Austria (later Poland) in 1900, and at the age of 22 made his first visit to the Middle East. He later became an outstanding foreign correspondent for the Franfurter Zeitung, and after his conversion to Islam travelled and worked throughout the Muslim world, from North Africa to as far east as Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. After years of devoted study he became one of the leading Muslim scholars of our age. His translation of the Holy Qur’an is one of the most lucid and well-referenced works in this category, dedicated to “li-qawmin yatafakkaroon” (For people who think).

Chapter 52, verses 47 – 49
But, verily, for those who are bent on doing evil, there is suffering in store [even] closer at hand than that [supreme suffering in the hereafter: [1 ] but most of them are not aware of it.
And so, await in patience thy Sustainer’s judgment [O Muhammad], for thou art well within our sight, [ 2 ] and extol thy Sustainer’s limitless glory and praise whenever thou risest up, and extol His glory at night, and at the time when the stars retreat.

Chapter 55, verses 1 – 13
The Most Gracious has imparted this Qur’an [unto man].
He has created man: He has imparted unto him articulate thought and speech.
[At His behest] the sun and the moon run their appointed courses; [before Him] prostrate themselves the stars and the trees.
And the skies has He raised high, and has devised [for all things] a measure, so that you [too, O men,] might never transgress the measure [of what is right]: weigh, therefore [your deeds] with equity, and cut not the measure short!
And the earth has He spread out for all living beings, with fruit thereon, and palm trees with sheathed clusters [of dates], and grain growing tall on its stalks, and sweet-smelling plants.
Which, then, of your Sustainer’s powers can you disavow?

Chapter 55, verses 26 – 30
All that lives on earth or in the heavens is bound to pass away; but forever will abide thy Sustainer’s Self, full of majesty and glory. Which, then of your Sustainer’s powers can you disavow?
On Him depend all creatures in the heavens and on earth: [and] every day He manifests Himself in yet another [wondrous] way. Which, then of your Sustainer’s powers can you disavow?

Translator’s Notes
[ 1 ] As in Chapter 32 Verse 21, the Qur’an stresses here the fact that every evil deed is bound to react in some way or other, even in this world, against him who commits it – either by depriving him of the affection of those who surround him and, thus deepening his inner loneliness, or, more directly, by creating circumstances which make the achievement of real happiness and satisfaction increasingly impossible.
