Not MQM but criminals in police crosshairs: Shahid Hayat

KARACHI: Karachi Police Chief, Shahid Hayat Wednesday clarified that the police do not target the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) rather they keep their efforts focused on a crack down on criminal elements in an indiscriminate fashion.

In a statement here, Shahid Hayat said the black sheep present within the ranks of police were being taken to task whereas the local police officers were discharging their responsibilities in a professional manner.

He said the police force continues to face dearth of necessary gear including arms and vehicles, adding, however, that soon bullet-proof jackets will be provided to the police personnel.

The Karachi Police Chief said the institution was facing numerous challenges and that only 27000-strong police force is inadequate for a population of 20 million.

He said the policeman who successfully foiled a bank heist has been given a reward of Rs500,000.

It is not out of place to mention that leaders of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) including its London-based Chief Altaf Hussain have time and again complained of their workers being targeted in guise of the ongoing operation against criminal elements.
