PIA’s request for Umrah fare raise rejected

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat on Tuesday rejected the Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) request for raising airfares for Umrah.
The committee under the Chairmanship of Rana Muhammad Hayat Khan considered the matter regarding comparison of air-fair between PIA and other airlines on account of Umrah, according to statement of assembly. Managing Director PIA told the committee that Umrah season commenced from mid-December, 2013 on wards and said that PIA has two types of flights uplifting Umrah passenger i.e schedule flights and the extra sections which are specially mounted to cater to Umrah demand.
However, the Committee did not satisfy with PIA response regarding reason for increase in Umrah and directed the PIA that detail and number of the Umrah pilgrims and income being generated there from may be furnished by 4th April, 2014. MD said that national airline in line with industry practice has implemented automated revenue system with multiple booking class fares for each sector. The availability of seats against each booking class is adjusted continuously and dynamically by the Automated Revenue Management System based upon overall market demand and competitor fares, thereby ensuring optimum utilization of space, he added.
MNAs Ms. Parveen Masood Bhatti, Ms. Nighat Parveen Mir, Ms. Shahnaz Saleem, Ms. Farhana Qamar, Ms. Marriyum Aurangzeb, Mr. Abdul Rehman Khan Kanju, Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani, Mr. Roshan Din Junejo, Ms. Nafeesa Inayatullah Khan Khattak, Mr. Muhammad Rehan Hashmi were present in the meeting.
