Fazl’s demand for fresh polls in SA angers members

By Zulfiqar Kunbhar

KARACHI: Members of Sindh Assembly (SA) on Friday rejected demand of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F)’s chief for fresh polls for SA and expressed their anger.
Fazal’s claim that the SA legislatures stand dissolved after passing resolution against the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) was not correct as it was as per law of SA, said members.
On March 31, Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) MPA Mehtab Akbar Rashdi tabled the resolution demanding Sindh government to ask federal government to abolish CII’s recent recommendations showing complete indifference and insensitivity to issues pertaining to women, like minimal age for marriage, recommendations against DNA test for rape indictments and no need of taking permission of wife for second marriage. Since the Council is unable to perform a positive role, it should be done away with. The resolution was passed unanimously as no parliamentary party opposed it.
The SA demanded the disbandment of the CII while passing a resolution to stop implementation on the CII’s earlier decisions.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman has shown his concern over the passage of a resolution in SA for dissolution of CII and said the CII was an important chapter in the Constitution of Pakistan-1973. The SA is no more the representative body of the people of Sindh and has lost its constitutional status after adopting the controversial resolutions, claimed JUI-F chief.
Talking to Daily Times Pakistan Muslim League-Functional’s MPA Nusrat Seher Abbasi also strongly condemned Fazal’s Statement.”
I have read this statement in newspapers. I strongly protest over this, said the lawmaker. She said since members of SA passed it at authentic level, the resolution is supposed to be agreed by every individual or even by organisation.
She said Maulana Fazlur Rehman should have read the content of resolution first before giving any statement. Did Mualana read content of resolution, I guess not. The Assembly demanded of the federal government any implementation pertaining to the CII’s decisions should be stopped, MPA added.
Where was Maulana when resolution regarding tantamount to the division of Sindh was passed. If something suits him, it is okay for him and if it is against him he opposes, she commented.
Parliamentary leader of Pakistan Muslim League (N) in SA Irfanullah Khan Marwat said there was nothing wrong in the resolution. “If it was against underage marriages, everybody is already against it. Secondly how can a rape victim produce evidence, he commented.
I advise Maulana to stop. If he would continue, we have also tongue. Lets not make us speak, said politician. “We are also Muslims of same calibre like anybody else. Nobody can hijack Islam from us, he added.
When asked if federal government would oppose CII’s recent recommendations he said, “We being members of SA have played our role, it is up to federal government now”.
Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hasan of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) said the resolution was against those elements committing serious crimes by using the shelter of Islam and any other legal cover. It was a show of collective wisdom by the members of SA, he said. How can the resolution hit directly to the Maluana Sahib. I think Fazlur Rehman should come forward and play his role regarding the elimination of recommendation against DNA test as evidence in rape cases,” MQM lawmaker added.
Syed Hafeezuddin of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) talking to Daily Times said, “Objective Resolution is a part of Constitution, we can not question it”.
