Islamabad bombing: PM announces compensation

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday approved Rs 500,000 each as compensation for the families of victims of the Islamabad fruit and vegetable market bombing.

According to a PM Office statement, those injured in the blast will receive Rs 75,000 each.

24 people lost their lives and dozens were injured when a bomb planted in a guava crate ripped through the market on Wednesday.

The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) distanced itself from the attack which was claimed by the United Baloch Army (UAB)

However, according to the Interior Ministry the initial probe indicated that the UAB was not involved.

Police Start Probe, Arrest Several Suspects

Police have arrested as many as 30 suspects during a search operation following the bombing at the fruit and vegetable market.

According to reports, four investigation teams have been sent to Multan, Kabirwala, Burewala and Arifwala while police have also arrested five suspects from Kabirwala, Pakpatan and Arif Wala.

During the search operation, which was carried out in I-11, I-10 and slum areas, Afghan nationals were also arrested.

Vendors Not Deterred

A day after a deadly bombing claimed 24 lives, vendors at the Islamabad fruit and vegetable market say they will not be deterred.

Traders and local residents gathered at the blast site to witness the damage caused by the bombing.

Mohammad Akhtar, a labourer at a fruit market, said such incidents would not shake residents. "Whatever bombing they do will not deter us. It will not frighten us. God has given us courage. We are not afraid of these things."

Severed fruit boxes were scattered throughout the market, located between Islamabad and its twin city of Rawalpindi.
