FIA summons Gilani in TDAP scam tomorrow

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has sent a notice to former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani containing 14 questions on alleged embezzlement of Rs7 billion in the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) during the five-year rule of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
The FIA has also asked the former prime minister to appear before its investigation team on April 11 to explain and verify some facts that have surfaced in the scam.
The Karachi crime circle of the agency had initiated the investigation a year before into the alleged embezzlement of Rs7 billion in freight subsidy which was allowed by the TDAP to exporters during the PPP tenure from 2008 to 2013.
The investigation revealed that top officials of the TDAP, owners of paper companies and middlemen of politicians embezzled Rs7 billion from the national exchequer in the name of freight subsidy and other schemes.
Two former chairmen of the TDAP, several senior officers, representatives of audit companies, middlemen of politicians and bankers have been arrested so far and 70 cases have been registered against them in this scam.
The FIA has also arrested personal secretary of former commerce minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim on availability of evidence regarding his involvement in this scandal and a legal notice has also been issued to Fahim. The FIA summoned the former prime minister on April 11 to explain his position in respect of 14 questions, including verification of appointment of retired bureaucrat Mohibullah Shah and some other accused in the case.
