Police report says Amna Bibi fabricated story about rape to implicate her opponents
LAHORE – A three-member Supreme Court bench has rejected police report in Amna Bibi self-immolation case and directed district and sessions judge of Multan to probe into the matter and file the inquiry report within six weeks.
The bench presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani took up Amna Bibi self immolation suo motu notice case for hearing Monday. Amna Bibi had committed self immolation after being raped.
During the course of hearing, Additional Inspector General of Punjab Police Khaliq Dad Malik presented police report on the incident, saying that Amna Bibi had not been subjected to rape. She fabricated the whole story and committed self immolation to implicate her opponents.
Expressing displeasure over the police report, the chief justice remarked can any girl set herself on fire. Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed observed that the police declared the culprits innocent in such cases to show its performance. “Police can say so that neither any girl was there in the name of Amna nor any such incident has taken place.”
Justice Jillani called Nizam Bibi, mother of Amna Bibi, on rostrum and expressed deep regret over the incident in Seraiki language, remarking those who subjected the girl to brutal act would not be escaped from the grip of law.
Last month, the alleged rape victim had committed self-immolation outside a police station in the presence of her younger brother after a police report helped the accused secure bail.
