Army mulls legal action over baseless allegations

* ISPR DG says ‘shameful propaganda’ over attack on Hamid Mir caused global insult to ISI * Allegations an endeavour to weaken the otherwise impregnable defence of country

RAWALPINDI: Strongly regretting as baseless the accusations against ISI DG General Zaheerul Islam of being responsible for the assassination attempt on anchorperson Hamid Mir, ISPR DG Major General Asim Bajwa said on Sunday that the attack was conducted by miscreants.
Talking to a private TV channel, the ISPR chief said that legal and constitutional action is being deliberated against “this shameful allegation, which had resulted in global gross insult and degrading of an army institution”. “I thank masses and media for strongly condemning this shameful propaganda aimed at an unsuccessful attempt to malign ISI, and standing by Pakistan Army and its institutions,” General Bajwa stated, adding that the government had formed a three-judge commission to probe the issue, and termed it a prudent move. He said the army would fully cooperate in this regard.
Responding to a question regarding continuous and intermittent display of the picture of the ISI DG, along with public accusations of his involvement in the attack on Hamid Mir, Gen Bajwa said that the ISI was globally maligned for eight hours continuously. “Pakistan Army was fully cognisant of all affairs and was in forefront for strengthening of democracy and freedom of speech,” he said, while adding that the army would also play its frontal role of defence of Pakistan with full force and vigour. “Such shameful allegations are but an endeavour to weaken the otherwise impregnable defence of the country,” the ISPR chief declared.
Hamid Mir was injured in the targeted attack by four unidentified gunmen near Nata Khan Bridge on Saturday. The incident took place when Mir had just reached Karachi from Islamabad. He was on his way to his office located on II Chundrigar Road when armed motorcyclists targeted him at around 5:30pm.
