Pakistani delegation in Riyadh for talks on Yemen conflict

ISLAMABAD: A high-level Pakistani delegation led by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz reached Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to hold talks over the ongoing crisis in Yemen.

Saudi Defence Minister Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz received the delegation. The delegation comprises political as well as senior military officials, including chief of general staff of Pakistan Army and deputy chief of air staff. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif sought guidance from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif before the departure to the Saudi capital and also held a brief meeting with other members of his delegation at the Chaklala Airbase. Prior to his departure, the minister said that Pakistan will take all measures to safeguard territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia. “Yes, the delegation headed by the defence minister is in Saudi Arabia,” FO spokesperson Tasneem Aslam confirmed.

The delegation will hold meetings with Saudi Crown Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz and Defence Minister Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz in Riyadh besides other high-ranking Saudi officials for discussions on the ongoing crisis in Yemen. The delegation is also expected to meet the leadership of Jeddah-based Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to discuss the possibility of brokering a truce in Yemen.
