ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said that the government would finalise its policy on Yemen’s issue in accordance with the decision of the parliament.

“We want to seek guidance from the House on Yemen’s issue and will follow the decision in it’s letter and spirit,” the prime minister said in his address to joint sitting of the parliament. The parliament’s session, which was convened on Monday, is discussing the ongoing security situation in Yemen. The prime minister said that the joint session had been convened with good intentions and dismissed the impression that it was mere an eyewash as alleged by some parliamentarians. He categorically made it clear that the government had not taken any decision on Yemen’s issue, so far. He said that the government was paying sincere attention to the input by house members and would make their suggestions part of the policy on Yemen. He said that the joint session was important as the whole nation was looking forward to its outcome.

He said besides parliament, the government had also been in touch with the military on the issue. In response to Leader of the House in Senate, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan who insisted yesterday that the government should give further details about the support sought by Saudi Arabia, the prime minister said that it was not appropriate to delve into minute details owing to the issue’s sensitive nature. “However, the government will not conceal any facts from the parliament,” he said. He said that the government was awaiting response from the Turkish leadership relating to its meetings with Iran and Saudi Arabia.

He mentioned that Pakistan along with Turkey would also consult with the leadership of Indonesia and Malaysia and would discuss the ways to ease onging tension in Yemen. The prime minister said that Pakistan would stand with Saudi Arabia whenever there was any threat to its integrity. However, he said that there appeared to be no such threat at the moment.
