Yemen crisis may impact regional security: army

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Army on Friday stressed that continuation of Yemen conflict may have serious implications for the regional security, as 181st corps commanders’ conference discussed in detail the crisis and its impact on the whole region. Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif chaired the conference held at the General Headquarters. The COAS directed the commanders to concentrate on total elimination of terrorism from across the country by coordinating with law enforcement and other government agencies. Addressing the meeting, Gen Raheel said, “Intelligence-based operations must be further intensified to unearth terrorist sleeper cells and apprehend terrorists and their abettors hiding in urban centres as well.” According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Gen Raheel expressed his complete satisfaction over the major gains recently achieved in the ongoing Operation Zarb-e-Azb in Khyber Agency. Appreciating the effects of intelligence-based operations and the improving security situation, the COAS emphasised the need to concentrate on combating extremism in society by re-energising the National Action Plan in true letter and spirit in order to achieve discernible results. The army chief expressed his satisfaction over the initiation of the repatriation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), which was reflective of a successful strategy. He directed all departments concerned to make the return smooth and enduing. “The eventual purpose of the operations is to ensure stability leading to normalcy and prosperity in accordance with the aspirations of the people of FATA,” the COAS remarked. According to the ISPR, the participants dwelt on professional matters, operational preparedness of the army and internal and external security situation of the country.
