President for improving governance and judicious exercise of authority
* Says that people expect effective service delivery for redressal of their problemsk

ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on Tuesday underscored the need to take effective measures for improving service delivery and working for public interest which would catalyse the socio-economic development.

The president said that civil servants played a key role in managing affairs of the state and the public through formulation of national policies and their implementation.

Speaking to the participants of 102nd National Management Course here at the President House, he said the people of Pakistan expected good governance and effective service delivery for redressal of their problems. Therefore, he said, there was a need for improving governance in a manner in which authority was judiciously exercised in the management of country’s human, economic, material and social resources for collective national development.

President Mamnoon stated that it was the responsibility of the state to provide an enabling environment wherein every individual was able to improve his social and economic life according to his abilities. Civil servants, he added, could play an important role in this regard. He stressed the need for continuity in policies and a unified approach in pursuit of national goals and priorities in order to put the country on the path of sustainable development. In this regard, he said, civil servants should act in unison and with dedication in achieving the goals in order to meaningfully contribute to the national good.

He said the civil service of Pakistan was the mainframe that held together the various state institutions and organisations. “The strength of this mainframe lies in your professionalism, competence, integrity, commitment and perseverance,” he added. He said it was imperative to further reform the civil services, especially those services that have direct interaction with the people. He also commended the role of National School of Public Policy (NSPP) in imparting quality training and building the capacity of civil servants for undertaking tasks of policy formulation and implementation.

Meanwhile, President Mamnoon on Tuesday inaugurated the 3rd Annual Conference of Pakistan Strategy Support Programme (PSSP). Speaking on the occasion, the president said that agriculture and natural resources played a vital role in Pakistan’s economy, not only as drivers of growth and poverty reduction but also in terms of their linkages with other sectors such as trade, commerce, industry and services.

He stated that agriculture was the backbone of national economy. Measures were being taken to upgrade agricultural infrastructure to ensure future food security in the country, he added. He said that the government was taking steps to promote pro-poor agricultural growth and food security.

The president said that the PSSP was playing a key and proactive role towards ensuring food security in the country in partnership with the federal and provincial governments and other stakeholders. There was a need to formulate an informed agricultural and economic policy through research, analysis and public discussion with the stakeholders for attaining agricultural productivity goals, he added.

He expressed the hope that the conference would afford a unique opportunity to the national and international experts to interact and deliberate towards achieving the common goal of building a food-secure future for Pakistan and its people.

On Tuesday, the president also met with Norwegian Red Cross President Sven Mollekleiv who called on him.

During the meeting, President Mamnoon said that increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters have further enhanced the importance of the role of humanitarian organisations.He admired the role of Norwegian Red Cross in alleviating the miseries of people both resulting from man-made and natural calamities throughout the world and particularly in Pakistan. He also appreciated the efforts of Norwegian Red Cross for its contribution in building the institutional capacities of Pakistan Red Crescent Society.
