Panama Leaks: Imran Khan asks Nawaz Sharif to step down

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on Sunday asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to step down as he has lost moral standing in the wake of massive leak of tax documents from a Panamanian law firm.

In his address to nation, the PTI chairman drew parallels between the Pakistani prime minister and his British counterpart David Cameron saying the latter was facing immense pressure to relinquish the post despite the fact that he had the shares in offshore companies of his father before assuming the office of prime minister.

"PM Cameron's only fault is to pay less in taxes, he did not abuse his powers," Khan said, adding that the Pakistani prime minister indulged in corruption, tax evasion and money laundering.

The PTI chairman refused to accept the proposed inquiry commission, demanding the government to set up a commission headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan to probe the matter.

"Government's defence is to blame others. Instead of seeking explanation from prime minister, ministers started blaming the Shaukat Khanum hospital," the PTI chairman said.

He claimed that Saeed Ahmed who laundered money for Nawaz Sharif is now serving as deputy head of the State Bank of Pakistan. Khan said Pakistan is not viable unless "we collect taxes and overcome corruption".

Imran Khan warned that if his demand was not accepted, he would announce his future course of action on April 24 when the PTI marks it foundation day. He said PTI's protest would continue until the prime minister tenders his resignation.
