Powerful quake rattles parts of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A 7.1 magnitude earthquake on Sunday jolted parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Pakistan and Azad Kashmir, sending people scurrying into streets, Geo News reported.

National Seismic and Tsunami Monitoring Center said epicenter of the quake was in Hindukush region in Afghanistan and it struck 236 kilometer below the surface. However, US Geological Survey put the intensity of the tremors at 6.6 magnitude.

Our correspondent from the federal capital said multi-storey buildings were seen shaking for at least 15 seconds as a strong earthquake hit Islamabad. The tremors were felt as far as New Delhi in India and Kabul in Afghanistan. The duration of quake varied between 15 seconds to 40 seconds. A man was killed and another injured when a landslide hit a car in Buner district of KP. Two children were injured when a wall collapsed due to strong tremors.

Authorities fear the earthquake might trigger landslides in upper parts of the country where torrential rains and snowfall killed over hundred people this month.

A state of emergency was declared in all the hospital of Peshawar following the earthquake and two children with minor injuries are said to have been moved to Lady Reading medical facility.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has asked military, federal and provincial organizations to remain alert in the wake of earthquake using all possible resources to protect the the people affected areas.

Major General Asghar Nawaz, Chairman of the National Disastor Management Authority, said efforts are underway to gather information from far flung areas in Malakand and Bajaur after the quake.
