Dr Asim released after 19 months

SHC directs interior ministry to put his name on ECL

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Friday directed the Ministry of Interior not to issue any fresh or duplicate passport to former federal minister Dr Asim Hussain and place his name on the Exit Control List.

The direction was issued by the SHC’s registrar in the light of SHC’s division bench judgment in which Dr Asim Hussain was granted bail in Rs470 billion corruption cases on medical grounds.

The registrar directed the secretary interior to implement the order in letter and spirit and submit the compliance report before the court.

The SHC’s Nazir also issued the release order of Dr Asim as the original passport and Canadian passport of Dr Asim was forwarded to the Nazir of court by the anti-terrorism court. Dr Asim, who was arrested by the Rangers on August 26, 2015, was released after 19 months of incarceration.

Dr Asim Hussain, a close aide of former president and PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, were facing corruption references pertaining to land fraud amounting to Rs.9.5 billion, money laundering amounting to Rs3 billion and misuse of authority, criminal breach of trust through fertiliser scam of Rs450 billion. Besides, NAB also accused him of illegally awarding gas contracts to a privately-managed gas processing company, Jamshoro Joint Venture Limited (JJVL) to process gas from government-owned gas fields without any open auction and causing loss of Rs17.338 billion to the national exchequer.

It is pertinent to mention that the SHC, on November 1 last year, had also granted bail to Dr Asim Hussain along with Pak Sarzameen Party leader Anis Qaimkhani, Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Abdul Rauf Siddiqui, Pasban leader Usman Moazam along with Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar, Pakistan People's Party leader Qadir Patel in case pertaining to terrorist harboring and their medical treatment charges.

According to the prosecution, former federal petroleum minister Dr. Asim Hussain had provided medical treatment to terrorists of banned outfit, MQM and Lyari gangs and shelter in his private hospital on the instruction of MQM leaders Abdul Rauf Siddiqui, Waseem Akhtar, Saleem Shahzad, PSP leader Anis Qaimkhani, PPP leader Qadir Patel and Pasban leader Usman Moazam.
