10,000MW to be added to national grid by next year: PM

SHEIKHUPURA: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday announced that 10,000 megawatts would be added to the national grid by next year.

The prime minister stated this while inaugurating the Bhikki power plant that would immediately add 717 megawatts to the national grid.

“18 months back I laid a foundation stone of this project and today I am here to inaugurate it”, he said and added that a house is not even fully constructed in this short period.

He said that Rs77 billion were spent on the Bhikki power plant project. Demand for electricity was used to increase between four and five percent in the past but now it is rising seven percent every year.

Referring to PPP’s planned protests against loadshedding, the prime minister said that those who had laid foundation of outages in the country are now giving threats.

He said that the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway would be completed this year. The federal government has been making efforts to improve law and order in Karachi. Besides, water supply projects have also been carried out in the metropolis.

Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif linked the inauguration of Bhikki power plant with the economic progress of the country.

Loadshedding will end in the country by the beginning of 2018, the chief minister claimed.
