FIA submits three names to SC for JIT

NAB, SBP, SECP, ISI, MI also short-list names

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has sent three names to the Supreme Court for the Joint Investigation Team (JIT). Additional Director General (BPS 21) Wajid Zia will most likely head the team.

The names of other two additional DGs — Captain (R) Ahmed Latif and Dr Shafiq-ur-Rehman — have also been sent but Mr. Latif said he might not be able to discharge his services due to some personal engagements.

The names of Director Islamabad Mazharul Haq Kakakhail and Director Lahore Usman Anwar have also been sent to the SC. One of them will be working as convener. Meanwhile, informed officials of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) said it might hire the services of a foreign firm, if the top court asked so, to assist the JIT in investigating offshore companies or tracking the money trail as the commission does not have any forensic experts.

The SECP hired the services of us-based M/s Diligence to conduct forensic investigation of a stock exchange scam in Karachi in 2005.

The SECP has shortlisted the names of Imran Inayat Butt, executive director, policy regulation and development department; Ali Azeem Ikram, executive director, insurance division; Yasir Manzoor, director surveillance; Muzaffar Mirza, director law; Usman Hayat, executive director, finance; and Tariq Bakhtawar, director.

Two names will be sent to the SC today. Meanwhile, the National Accountability Bureau, which is also making its mind to go for review of the 20th April judgment, has shortlisted the names of DG NAB (operations) Zahir Shah, DG NAB Multan Attique-ur-Rehman, DG Lahore Major (R) Shahzad Saleem, DG Quetta Naeem Mangi and Director Farmanullah for the JIT.

Two of them would be forwarded to the SC for JIT today. The State Bank of Pakistan has also shortlisted the names of its directors Dr Tariq Hassan, Hafiz Muhammad Yousaf, Zubyr Soomro, Khawaja Iqbal Hassan, Zafar Masud, Ardeshir Khursheed Markar, Mohammad Riaz and Sarmad Amin for the JIT.

Two of them would be sent to the SC for the JIT. They all are considered eminent professionals. Informed officials in military said their senior command was sending four names, two each from the Inter Services Intelligence, (ISI) and Military Intelligence today.
