Rs10 bn hush money offer: PML-N dares Imran to disclose name

PTI chief says the man who made the offer was close aide of Shahbaz

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb on Wednesday threw a challenge to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan to name the person who had made an offer of Rs10 billion to him, if he had slight morality to do so.

The minister said this in reaction to the hotly-debated and widely-reported claim of Imran Khan that he had been offered to stay silent and for this he would be paid Rs10 billion with regard to the PanamaLeaks.

She asked Imran, “If you have even slight morality, you should name the one who made this offer to you.” She emphasised that Imran Khan should share the evidence, saying only allegations were not sufficient.

During a function at the Shaukat Khanum Hospital, Imran alleged that he had been made an offer in the Panama case by the Sharifs. The minister contended that revealing the name of that person was the responsibility of Imran and it would be a test of his morality. She said the PTI chief should disclose the name of persons, institutions or parties, who made the offer to him.

She said that Imran's allegation was totally baseless and this was in continuation of his attitude of leveling baseless allegations against the personalities and institutions of the country. The minister charged that Imran was trying to make the decision of the SC judges regarding the PanamaLeaks case controversial.

Marriyum alleged that the PTI chairman always targeted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who has been elected three times by the people of Pakistan. She claimed that the allegations that Imran had been leveling against the leadership during the past four years were rejected by the apex court.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said that he would not reveal the name of the person who made the Rs10 billion offer to him to become silent on the Supreme Court's decision over PanamaLeaks case.

Speaking in an interview, Khan said that the person who made an offer was close to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif but if he revealed his name, the person would get into trouble, further adding that the offer was made two weeks ago.

Khan also said that the Rs10 bn was just an initial offer. Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah called on the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo moto notice of Imran Khan’s allegation.

"The Chief Justice should ask Imran Khan who offered him the money," said Sanaullah while speaking outside the Punjab Assembly. The accusations he had hurled should be inquired into, the law minister said.

“If the accusations are proved to be true, the person who offered the amount should be brought before the entire nation," he remarked, adding "That person should be punished." “If the allegations are proved to be false, Imran should be taken to task,” Sanaullah suggested.

"For the last four years, Imran has been insulting people," he maintained. “He should be sent a notice and punished." Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader and daughter of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, also responded to Imran's claim.

In a tweet, Maryam responded to the accusation and called Imran a 'liar'. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Saeed Ghani said that Imran Khan's allegations were very serious. Speaking to reporters, Ghani said it was Imran Khan's duty to clarify who made the offer. Upon whose instructions the offer was made. All such details must be brought to light, Ghani added.

The PPP senator said if such an offer was made, an inquiry should be conducted against the prime minister on these grounds. He added that by not clarifying, Imran Khan's statement was also casting a shadow of doubt on the PPP. Separately, President Awami National Party Asfandyar Wali reiterated that Imran Khan should clarify who made him the offer and he should give a detailed explanation.
