LAHORE – Former prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has held Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his coalition government for the present political crisis in Pakistan, and said that there is still time to resolve issues by holding negotiations with Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri.

Talking to journalists after a consultative meeting of the Pakistan People’s Party here Monday, he warned that if the government delayed the dialogue, the situation might go out of its control and become very serious. He also said the governments cannot be removed through long marches and sit-ins but they were forced out because of their own mistakes.

The former prime minister said that the PPP was not with the government but with the state, constitution and democracy. He emphasized the importance of flexibility in politics and suggested that Imran Khan should talk about a package with the government to ensure next election free, fair and transparent.

He said that the PPP had strong reservations about election results and was of the opinion that the election was not fair but accepted the results for the sake of democracy. Former Punjab governor and PPP Secretary General Latif Khosa said the Pakistan Muslim League-N had always used courts for its objectives.

He said the election tribunals were bound to decide cases in four months but despite passage of 14 months, many cases were yet to be decided. Even if some decisions were given, the PML-N takes stay orders from the courts, he said. He said PPP was playing role of a responsible opposition despite the fact that Shahbaz Sharif gave many threats to former president Asif Ali Zardari.

Khosa said that the PPP would not accept kingship of Gullu Butt and Pomi Butt. The PML-N has given nothing to the country except crises, he said, adding that the government took more loans in 14 months than in the past 28 years. He said that 24 members of (Nawaz) Sharif family were working on important government positions and the rulers were treating all state institutions like their private business.
