Zardari, Altaf against civil disobedience
*Ex-president says political issues must be resolved with talks *MQM chief says Nawaz, Imran should initiate talks for peace
ISLAMABAD – Expressing concern over current political tension, former president Asif Ali Zardari on Monday said that the political issues must be resolved with talks and people should not be instigated for civil disobedience movement.
Criticizing Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan, the former president said that democracy would be damaged by the civil disobedience. “Every step that harms democracy must be avoided,” he said.
On Sunday night, PTI Chairman Imran Khan launched a civil disobedience movement in a last-ditch attempt to knock out the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Talking to his party leader on telephone, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain suggested Imran Khan to initiate dialogue instead of a civil disobedience movement. He said that the government has delayed the dialogue process.
He said that the current political situation was proving to be detrimental for the country. If Imran Khan has guts, he must take a daring step rather than mocking with the nation, he said. He questioned how would this civil disobedience movement prove to cause damage to the government when people were already not paying their bills and taxes?
Altaf said that he was not a supporter of the Pakistan Muslim League-N that has not treated MQM well in the past but he was not a supporter of vengeance. Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif should initiate talks for peace, he said.
