Govt asked COAS to play facilitative role: ISPR

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif was asked by the government to play "facilitative role for resolution of current impasse," DG ISPR Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa tweeted on Friday.

Bajwa said the decision was taken during the meeting held at the PM House on Thursday.

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the National Assembly floor said the government had not requested nor had the army asked to act as a mediator in helping resolve the political crisis.

The prime minister said in his presence Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar had received a telephone call regarding Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri wanting to meet Army chief General Raheel Sharif. Prime Minister Sharif informed parliamentarians that he said if Khan and Qadri had requested a meeting the army chief should meet them.

Prior to the prime minister’s address, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had revealed that the army was made part of the negotiations at the request of the protesting parties.

The prime minister and interior minister’s statements were dismissed and termed false by PAT chief Tahirul Qadri who said the government had asked for the army to act as a mediator.

PTI chairman Imran Khan said his party had not asked the army to act as a mediator.
