PM Nawaz leaves for Peshawar to supervise operation

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif left for Peshawar to supervise the ongoing rescue operation against Taliban militants who attacked the Army-run school Tuesday and killed over 100 students.

PM Nawaz said that he can’t sit and wait in Islamabad. "I have decided to proceed to Peshawar and I will supervise the operation my self," he said in a short statement before his departure to Peshawar.

"Peshawar incident is tragic and painful," the premier said.

It is pertinent to mention that over a hundred persons mostly students were killed and dozens others injured when militants attacked Army Public School situated on Warsak Road in Peshawar.

Five to six militants took students and teachers hostage while exchange of fire between the militants and security forces was underway. A senior police official said a "huge blast" had occurred inside the building.

The military sources said a "rescue operation" was under way and the bulk of staff and students had been evacuated.

Chief Minister KP Pervez Khattak told the media that 104 people including 84 children were killed in the attack.

A spokesman for a faction of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the gunmen had been ordered to shoot older students but not children.
