LHC dismisses Sadiq’s plea against NA-122 vote recounting

INP

LAHORE - The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday dismissed National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq’s petitions against the Election Tribunal’s decision regarding vote recounting in NA-122 constituency.

Justice Ijazul Hassan of the LHC said that Sadiq’s petitions were non-maintainable as decisions of the election tribunals could not be challenged before high courts. During proceeding, Justice Ejaz dismissed Sadiq’s plea, asking him to let the vote recount take place. The court said that the recounting would not affect the results.

Last week, the election tribunal had accepted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s request for opening ballot bags in NA-122 to probe allegations of rigging. On Monday, Sadiq challenged the verdict, stating that the order for vote recount was against the Supreme Court’s directives and accused tribunal judge Justice Kazim Ali Malik of committing contempt of court.

Sadiq’s lawyers say they have decided to challenge the Election Tribunal and Lahore High Court’s decisions in the Supreme Court. NA-122 is one of the four constituencies where the PTI has sought a recount and verification of voters’ thumb impressions. Sadiq had defeated Imran in the 2013 general elections and the PTI had challenged the results.
