Dwindling relationship kept Obama from travelling to Pakistan: White House

WASHINGTON: “US President Obama once expressed the desire to visit Pakistan but the wish could not come true mainly due to the political tensions between the two countries during the past eight years”, the statement came from White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest, in a news briefing at The White House.

The subject was highlighted in a press briefing due to the recent telephonic conversation between President elect Donald Trump and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Sharif had called Trump on November 9th to congratulate him on his recent victory while Trump said that he would like to visit Pakistan in future.

The Press Secretary added that “as President Trump would have a variety of places to visit and as soon as he begins planning for his overseas visits, Pakistan would certainly be one of them".

He further said that a visit from the American president sends a powerful message to the people of any country, whether they are from our closest allies or from a country like Pakistan, with whom our ties have been complicated over a period of recent years.
