US ‘praises’ govt for improved governance


ISLAMABAD: US Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment Catherine Novelli praised the government for improving governance during the last three years.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar received a telephone call from her on Tuesday.

According to a press release, Dar thanked her for the cooperation and assistance provided by the US which has led to an increase in US-Pakistan bilateral engagement at both public and private sector.

Novelli hoped that incase the minister visits Washington DC, they could meet to discuss the bilateral economic portfolio. The under secretary hoped that bilateral economic cooperation would continue with the same zeal and commitment under the new administration of President-elect Donald Trump.

Dar expressed satisfaction at the ongoing bilateral economic relations with the US and hoped for enhanced relations with the incoming US administration. Both sides expressed good wishes and agreed to work closely on mutually beneficial areas of bilateral economic cooperation.

Separately, Dar arrived at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport to participate in the 4th Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit December 6-9.

He will also attend 75th anniversary celebrations of French Agency for Development (AFD) hosted by French President Francoise Hollande in Paris on Tuesday, a Finance Ministry statement read.

The ceremony would be attended by French Foreign Minister Jean Marc Ayrault, president of Guinea, prime minister of Haiti, Sri Lankan finance minister, AFD chief executive officer, French lawmakers, diplomats and members of the civil society and media.

The AFD has been operating in Pakistan since May 2007. Its programmes mainly focus on financing in energy efficiency and hydropower projects, adding value to Pakistan's efforts in tackling energy shortages in the country.
