LAHORE: German Ambassador to Pakistan Ina Lepel called Pakistan an important ally in South Asia, adding that her country would be willing to increase cooperation in Pakistan's energy sector. She spoke during her visit to the 500kV Grid Station Nokhar on Tuesday.

The station is a project of the National Transmission and Despatch Company Limited (NTDC), which received funds from German state development bank KfW. She was joined by First Secretary Sebastian Ernst and a KfW delegation consisting of Dr Frank Albert, Wolfgang Moellers and Dr Parvaiz Naim. She praised the maintenance and efficiency of the Nokhar project. General Manager-GSO Sabz Ali Khan briefed the delegation about the construction of the station which has benefited the domestic, commercial, industrial and agricultural consumers of Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Sialkot and Narowal. It has resulted in a better voltage profile, no forced load shedding and the creation of jobs for the locals.

The delegation earlier met NTDC Managing Director Dr Fiaz Chaudhry at his office in WAPDA House. They showed an interest in cooperating on future NTDC projects. Dr Fiaz welcomed their interest, affirming that Germany has played an important role in the development of Pakistan's energy sector. He noted that the 500 kV grid stations in Sheikhupura, Shaikh Muhammadi Peshawar and Nokhar were completed because of the financial assistance of KfW.
