50 schools with Cambridge system to be established: CM Sindh
KARACHI (Dec 1): Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, keeping in view new trends in education system, has decided to establish 50 new schools to offer Cambridge system of education in the province.
He took this decision while presiding over a meeting to review the progress of umbrella schemes (means a major scheme under which similar smaller schemes are launched) here at the CM House. The meeting was attended by Minister Works & Services Imdad Pitafi, Chairman P&D Mohammad Waseem, Principal Secretary Sohial Rajput, Secretary School Education Dr Iqbal Durani, Secretary Health Dr Fazal Pechuho, Secretary Finance Hassan Naqvi, Secretary Works Aijaz Memon, Secretary Culture Akbar Leghari, Secretary Colleges Parvez Sihar and others.
He said that the education system has deteriorated in public sector. The reasons behind this decline are multiple such as lack of interest in the teaching staff to teach professionally, lack of capacity building, lack of basic facilities and various others. “Now, not only we have to address all these issues but have to introduce new trends in education system,” he said.
The Chief Minister Sindh directed Secretary School Education Dr Iqbal Durani to start new 50 schools all over Sindh where Cambridge system of education be started. “I want you to prepare a detailed policy under which qualification and selection of teachers for new schools, procedure of admission, test of admission, uniform, details of facilities are mentioned,” he said and added he would a separate meeting to finalise the teachers qualifications, procedures of selection and students admission would be approved,” he said.
Murad Ali Shah said that the provincial government spends a considerable chunk of its budget on education but “still we have not succeeded to reap fruits of these spending,” he said and added “this is why I want to improve the standard of education in public sector, I want to prepare a new lot right from nursery to O’level,” he said.
The chief minister directed secretary school education that he was keen to start new 50 schools from April 2018. “Therefore, necessary arrangements may be made accordingly,” he said.
The chairman P&D Board, Mohammad Waseem briefed the chief minister on umbrella schemes and said that the releases of funds and start work on them has become difficult. As a result, the progress of umbrella schemes was very slow. On this the chief minister directed the P&D Chairman to call a special meeting of all the departments and sort out all the issues of umbrella schemes. “If umbrella schemes cannot be continued then decision may be taken accordingly and scheme-specific budget be allocated so that they could be completed,” he said.
In the meeting some umbrella schemes were pointed out which were in progress since 2006. The chief minister said that the schemes on which funds have not been utilized so far may be dropped and where funds have been utilized they must be completed with new arrangement and be worked out by e P&D and concerned department.
