Government cannot lift Youtube ban without SC permission: Sheikh Aftab

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Sheikh Aftab Ahmed said on Wednesday that the Youtube case is still in court and the government cannot lift the ban on its own. Addressing the National Assembly on Wednesday, the minister said that it was the Supreme Court that had ordered the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block offensive material on YouTube and all other websites which lead to a complete ban of Youtube. On February 6, Minister of State for Information Technology, Anusha Rehman informed the Senate that PTA does not have the technology to block all objectionable content on YouTube and that no mechanism exists anywhere in the world to block 100 per cent objectionable content. The minister said the matter was reviewed several times but the situation effectively remained the same and technical experts were of the view that there was no technical solution available. Rehman further said that impediments are present in the blasphemous movie Innocence of Muslims on YouTube as non availability of technical solution to block the secured objectionable content with 100 per cent effectiveness and orders of the Supreme Court are still effective.
