UNHCR representative calls on KP governor

PESHAWAR – United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative Indrika Ratwatte called on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan here at Governor’s House and discussed matters pertaining to the Afghan refugees in Pakistan. UNHCR Peshawar Sub-office Jacques Franguin head was also accompanying the high commissioner. The governor welcomed Indrika Ratwatte on his visit to Pakistan and appreciated the UNHCR engagement with Pakistan over return of Afghan refugees to its homeland. The governor said that if successful repatriation of Afghan refugees will be ensured and peace should be maintained in Afghanistan and Pakistan, it will resolve major problems of the region. He said that rehabilitation of Afghan refugees should be in secure manner. He said that Pakistan shares multiple ethnic, religious and cultural commonalities with Afghanistan, adding that peace, stability and development of Afghanistan was in the best interest of the government and people of Pakistan. Mahtab reaffirmed government commitment to the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation process, saying that it was the most viable way to end violence and bring durable peace and stability to Afghanistan and the region. The governor said that over the last 3 decade, Pakistan has been a patient host to millions of Afghan refugees on its soil and urged the need for the UNHCR and the international community for playing its role in creating conducive conditions for the early return of Afghan refugees from Pakistan. He assured that Pakistan would continue to work with UNHCR, the Afghan government to ensure return of the refugees.
