24 children lose consciousness at Lahore school event

LAHORE: At least 24 children attending a function at a private school in Lahore on Saturday lost consciousness when the hall they were in got filled with gas and smoke leaking from a faulty electricity generator. Around 100 students of class 10 were attending the farewell party in the basement hall of the private school located in Gulshan Park in Mughalpura area of Lahore. When an electricity outage temporarily halted the event, the school administration turned on the backup electricity generator, which suddenly started leaking gas and smoke. The basement hall was soon filled with the leaking gas and smoke, causing 24 of the 100 schoolchildren to lose consciousness. Rescue workers arrived at the scene and shifted the unconscious children to Services Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Other children were also safely evacuated from the basement. Sources at the hospital said the condition of the children was out of danger. Police have arrested the owner of the private school. Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the incident and has ordered a report of the incident from the district administration. Meanwhile, Khawaja Salman Rafique, the Punjab government's adviser on health, telephoned the administration at the Services Hospital and advised them to give the best possible medical treatment to the affected children.
