Nabeel Gabol resigns from National Assembly

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Nabeel Gabol resigned from his National Assembly seat on Tuesday citing personal reasons. “I have resigned from my National Assembly seat today. I was a misfit in the MQM. I was unable to give as much time as was required by the MQM,” he said. “Everyone in the Rabita Committee is my friend, and I also have good relations with Altaf Hussain,” he said, rejecting reports that there were differences between him and some party members. “I am from a political family and have been in politics since 27 years. I will continue to be in politics,” he said. Gabol said he had submitted his resignation to the Assistant Secretary at the National Assembly Secretariat, and was now waiting for the NA Speaker to accept his resignation. He said he would hold a press conference on Wednesday to clarify things further. 'Gabol is still a member of MQM' Speaking to reporters here today, MQM senior leader Abdul Rasheed Godil clarified that Gabol was still a part of the MQM, and will continue to be a member of the party and its Central Executive Committee. "Gabol has resigned from his National Assembly seat today. He was a part of our party yesterday, he is still a part of our party today and will continue to be a member in the future," he said. Gabol, who was elected from NA-246 (Karachi) on MQM’s ticket, has had long-running differences with the MQM and had claimed of being told that he faced danger from his own party. Speaking to Geo News anchor Shahzeb Khanzada earlier this month, Gabol complained he was rarely called to party meetings and that his image was being tarnished in front of party chief Altaf Hussain. However, he said he had sent his resignation to the MQM’s Rabita Committee some time ago but had not left the party. He had claimed that his differences had been conveyed to the Rabita Committee, and his reservations had also been removed. “I will stay in MQM as long as Altaf Hussain trusts me,” he had said. Gabol left the Pakistan Peoples Party to join the MQM on March 13, 2013. Upon joining the MQM he said the PPP was no longer the party of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, therefore, he decided to end his 25-year-long affiliation with it.
