Japan to inject Rs9 m to run PICU at Indus Hospital Karachi


KARACHI: It’s a gesture of friendship and bilateral cooperation between Government of Pakistan and Government of Japan and even between both sides of people to help each other in every aspect of life. For this purpose, Japan's government has taken the wheel on its hand to spend more than 1.75 billion rupees to establish a state of the art 150-bed children hospital under the banner of Japan Institute of Cooperation Agency (JICA) and more than US$86,460 approximately Rs9 million to establish and equip pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Indus Hospital Karachi.

Consul-General of Japan Toshikazu Isomura while talking to media at the handing over ceremony said that Japan's government was always trying to help out Pakistan government and specially its citizens and it's a gift from Government of Japan to the people of Pakistan. “we have established a children hospital in Karachi and Islamabad at PIMS Hospital and now we have equipped Indus Hospital's PICU.”

Toshikazu Isomura also wished that this support from the people of Japan would further strengthen friendly relationship between Japan and Pakistan

Under the GGP scheme, Japan has funded about 350 projects in Pakistan since 1989 and this is the 16th GGP project to be implemented by the Consulate General of Japan in Karachi since 2009.

Sindh Government Children Hospital Karachi

Japan Institute of Cooperation Agency (JICA) has started a new era in health sector at Sindh Government Children Hospital (SGCH) Karachi near Nagan Chowrangi with the collaboration of Health Department, Government of Sindh.

The 50-bed primary care Sindh Government Children Hospital was established in 1994 and inaugurated by Late Mohtarma Benzir Bhutto. Now the JICA has helped it with enhanced facilities and added beds up to 200.

Dr Asif Zaman, the medical superintendent and the project director of SGCH said that the ground breaking and construction work began on March 18, 2014 and the Japanese contractors completed the construction work in a year, on June 21, 2015. After completion of the building, the Japanese government installed state of the art world class equipment with a cost of Rs 1.7 billions at the 150 bedded hospital project in March 2015.

Then the health department handed over this project to an NGO for smooth running of administration and patient care, given the task by bidding to Poverty Eradication Initiative (PIE).

Sharing the OPD data and hospital facilities, director of PEI Dr Iman Baig with the help of JICA, catered 26,000 children in January 2017 and only 53 patient have been referred to NICH.

In December 2016, Ambassador of Japan Takashi Kurai along with Minister Health Dr Sikander Mehndro inaugurated the hospital.
