Government seeks early hearing of Lakhvi’s case in SC
ISLAMABAD: The federal government is seeking the early hearing of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi’s case in the Supreme Court. The Interior Minister has challenged the suspension of the detention order of Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai attacks.
On Monday, the IHC had suspended the notification of detention of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi in the Mumbai attacks case. The suspension orders were issued by IHC's Justice Noor ul Haq Qureshi.
Lakhvi had moved the IHC against the government's decision regarding his detention.
On December 19, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi has been detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO), a day after being granted bail by an anti-terrorism court. The ATC had granted bail to Lakhavi on surety bonds of Rs 500,000.
Lakhvi is currently detained at the Adiala prison after being placed on judicial remand for 14-days for his alleged involvement in a kidnapping case.
Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi was arrested in February 2009 and was indicted along with six others on 25 November 2009 for planning and helping to carry out the Mumbai attacks.
Lakhvi was believed to be the operational chief of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) which has been accused by India of carrying out the attacks in Mumbai.
