SC denies Kasuri’s claim regarding arrest of Zainab’s murderer

LAHORE: A spokesman for the Supreme Court (SC) has denied Advocate Ahmad Raza Kasuri’s statement that the suspect in the rape-murder case of seven-year-old Zainab has been apprehended.

According to a statement issued by the SC spokesman, the lawyer’s claim attributed to the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar was “incorrect” and “out of the context’.

The chief justice only spoke of reports on social media suggesting arrest of the culprit, it said.

Earlier, Kasuri claimed the CJP told him that the suspect in the case had been arrested. “CJP gave me the good news that the culprit has been caught,” he said.

He also claimed that the man seen with Zainab in a CCTV video was her relative.

The Punjab government had already denied the claims.

Zainab, a resident of Rod Kot area of Kasur, was kidnapped on her way to a tuition centre on January 05. Her body was found at a garbage pile near Kashmir Chowk after four days. Initial postmortem report revealed the minor was strangled to death after being raped for multiple times.

The chief justice had taken a suo motu notice after the incident sparked nationwide outrage.
