ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday handed over the certified copies of nomination papers of Chairman Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan to son of former chief justice Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

An official of ECP, Khurshid Alam told APP that the election commission also handed over the copies of erstwhile references filed by late Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi and senior leader of Mutahidda Quomi Movement (MQM) Dr Farooq Sattar seeking disqualification of Imran Khan. He said that the details of nomination papers were available on the website of the commission. Anybody can have the same.

However Dr Arsalan Iftikhar had sought certified copies, which were provided to him. The reference would be submitted to Speaker National Assembly, who is bound to give his ruling within one month period. If a speaker fails to forward the reference to ECP within one month - the reference is automatically lands in the ECP. Subsequently, the election commission is bound to decide the matter within three months.

As per law - if a legislator proves concealing an information in his nomination papers - could be sentenced to three years jail and Rs 5000 fine, said Khurshid Alam. It merits mention here that Dr Arsalan was seeking religious decree from Ulema and religious scholars on the status/punishment of a person having and concealing illegitimate child.

Arsalan Iftikhar had decided on July 7 to file reference against PTI chairman Imran Khan in Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Addressing the journlists, Arsalan said that Imran Khan doesn't fulfill the qualifications specified in Article 62, 63 of the constitution to contest elections, adding that he is neither Saadiq (honest) nor Amin (righteous).
