PM updated on Zarb-e-Azb at GHQ


*Nawaz lays a floral wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhada, pays rich tributes to martyrs

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday visited the General Headquarters of the Pakistan Army to get an update on the progress on the Zarb-e-Azb military operation in Waziristan tribal area and to pay his respects at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada.

Accompanied with Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif, Minister for Interior Affairs Chaudhry Nisar Ali, Minister for Finance Affairs Senator Ishaq Dar, Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi, the prime minister was briefed on operational matters by senior military officials.

Nawaz Sharif is regularly in touch with the military leadership since the launch of the Zarb-e-Azb and was being regularly updated on the successes. The operation aimed at clearing North Waziristan and other tribal areas from terrorists and to eliminate their hideouts has got the full backing of all the political parties and the government.

On arrival at the GHQ, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif received the prime minister and a contingent presented him guard of honour. Nawaz laid a floral wreath at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada and paid rich tributes to the officers and jawans who have rendered the supreme sacrifice of their lives for the protection of their motherland.

The prime minister who earlier held separate meetings with Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman General Rashad Mahmood and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Asif Sandila at the PM House, discussed professional matters and the ongoing operation.

The prime minister assured that the government would continue to give high priority to national security. On Wednesday, the prime minister also held a meeting with army chief and lauded the sacrifices the Pakistan Army was rendering for the country.
