50% decrease in Karachi extortion: Police chief

KARACHI: There has been a 50% decrease in the number of extortion cases in the city, said Police chief Ghulam Qadri Thebo.

Thebo told Geo News that extortion was being collected in the name if Zakat and Fitra and this was also being used by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

He added that an extortion cell had been formed to address complaints but the business community would not lodge cases against extortionists.

Meanwhile, the police chief’s statement has been dismissed by the business community in the city. Karachi Tajir Itehad chairperson, Atiq Mir said the cases of extortion had increase by over 100%.
